The Suffolk village of Euston is located about 3 kilometres south of the town of Thetford. The village contains a number of important buildings, including Euston Hall and the surrounding area of Euston Park. Euston Hall was the country seat of the Duke of Grafton, a keen racing enthusiast, and racing took place on the Park in the middle of the 18th century. The first recorded meeting was held on Thursday 1st September 1763 when the main Subsciption Purse was won by the Duke with his bay colt which defeated Admiral and Lord March’s chestnut filly. The final meeting was held on Thursday 8th October 1767 when the First 85 Guineas Subscription was a keenly fought affair in which Bobby Shafto’s Ferdinando got the better of Lord Bolingbroke’s Tartuffe and Mr Meynell’s Pancake. The closing Second 85 Guineas Subscription went to Sir Charles Bunbury’s Bellario. |
